   Thomas C. Viles

Thomas Viles is a litigator. He focuses on international legal controversies, criminal defense cases, the representation of foreign States, and constitutional questions.

He is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia, the State of New York, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and numerous federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court and all federal courts of appeals.

He litigates white- and blue-collar criminal cases, at trial and on appeal, and he has experience in extraditions, international judicial assistance matters, and international criminal proceedings.

He also advises foreign governments on U.S. and international law, and he acts as attorney for foreign nations, particularly those finding themselves cast in an adversarial position in relation to United States foreign and economic policy.

His civil liberties practice consists of advocacy on behalf of political, social, and religious groups and their members.

He taught Law at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom for several years, where he also was a Junior Research Fellow. Before coming to Berliner, Corcoran & Rowe, he worked in the litigation departments of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City, and Williams & Connolly in Washington.

Mr. Viles holds LL.M. and Ph.D. degrees in International Law from Cambridge University. He also received a J.D. from New York University, where he was an Arthur Garfield Hays Fellow, and a B.A. from Harvard College. He served as law clerk to Chief Judge William Wayne Justice of the U.S. District Court in Texas.

He has authored publications on a variety of topics in international law, criminal law, and civil liberties.
